Success is the status of having achieved and accomplished an aim or objective. Being successful means the achievement of desired visions and planned goals. Furthermore, success can be a certain social status that describes a prosperous person that could also have gained fame for its favorable outcome.

Across the globe, people hold various views of what success is and how to achieve it. I was raised in a society where people are viewed to be successful when they have impressive academic degrees, careers, and possessions. And for some time, I agreed with this. It is in line with how Merriam-Webster dictionary defines success: “the attainment of wealth, favor or eminence.”

Couple of months ago, I saw my former classmate’s post on social media saying that he finally obtained a doctorate at 29 and that he bought a brand new car and house.

I began paralleling myself to him. I’m a year older but I don’t possess anything that he does. I became covetous of his success. But then one day in his social media post, he expressed that despite his success, he feels empty. He said that he has nobody to personally share his achievements with. I then realized that comparing myself to others is a excruciating mistake. I should have concentrated on the things that matter.

How to define success in life?

The only person that can answer the question above is you. I am neither able nor willing to prescribe the ultimate definition of success, as this is not possible. Every person is thinking differently about being prosperous in life and is defining success in another way, so there can’t exist a definition that is suitable for all. It is very important that you know exactly how to define success in life! Make yourself aware what accomplishment, success and prosperity in general means to you in your life. Some might define success as having luxurious cars and a huge mansion, whereas others consider a life full of joy and happiness with their family as the true meaning of success. Once you have figured out what is important for you personally you are able to focus on your visions and goals.

It is truly an accomplishment to achieve high academic degrees, a stable career, and properties. But I realized that how you make use of that success to make a difference and have a positive impact on other people’s lives is the most fulfilling.

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” – Jeremiah 17:7-8
