American philosopher and educator John Dewey was well-known for his “learning by doing” educational philosophy. This idea centers on the active participation of students in the teaching-learning process through practical and goal-oriented activities.

Numerous studies in education have been conducted to demonstrate how well the theory works for students’ academic performance. In an article published by the Learning Agency Lab, it was highlighted that learning by doing works because this theory actively engages and generates the knowledge of the students. Moreover, the article suggested letting the students explain their activities or process their answers rather than using traditional assessments like pen and paper tests.

In science class, learning by doing can be seen using simple science experiments, demonstrations, and basic science skills such as investigations. Students really enjoy the simple science experiment in the classroom because this activity helps them to think and assess their work. This also helps them to develop their communication skills by discussing their answers with their classmates, which promotes socialization among them.
