Classes start in June. The period when teachers ask themselves whether they are ready to face every scene that might happen during the first day of school. It is the month when teachers and the pupils are trying to get to know each other well. This is also the adjustment period. In order to assure that they are ready for the coming year, here is a list of pointers to remember before classes start.

  1. Make your room conducive for learning and child-friendly room. It is the first pointer that you must consider in the list. Starting the class without these will be useless for transmitting knowledge and skills to the learners. As a teacher, one must see the appropriateness of his/her classroom to the characteristics of the pupils he/she will handle. This will inspire and motivate the learners to do their best in their day-to-day performance.
  1. Set your rules and regulations. Rules and regulations are very important in maintaining the discipline of the pupils. They are very vital in starting the school year right. Pupils tend to identify what should be the things they need to remember.
  1. Desks/ armchairs are labeled and arranged properly. This will help pupils to locate their places on the first day of class and avoiding problems when arranging seat plan.
  1. Fairly distribute books and other school related materials among pupils. No favoritism is allowed in doing this.
  1. Make your decisions firm. As a teacher, you should have “word of honor.” After saying something to the class, you should stand for it. If you cannot stand for it, keep it to yourself for your own safety.

Be sensitive to the needs of pupils. Putting yourself in the shoes of others is the best reason for demonstrating this kind of attitude. It will be a gateway towards the building of rapport. By being sensitive to their needs, you will be loved by your pupils and will earn the respect that you wish to have.
