One of the main tasks of school mangers and other leaders is decision making. It may affect the very organization, the activities and their goals to its attainment or its failure, harmony or chaos solutions or creating another problem.
To increase the chances of getting the right things to happen, here are some useful strategies in arriving to smart decisions depending on factors and situations.
1. SWOT: evaluates the strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats included in a program, projects or activity and come up with an Action Plan to guide your course of action.
Strengths : your characteristics or things that gives you an advantage or differentiate you.Action Plan: To maintain and leverage your strengths.
Weakness: your characteristics or things that place you at disadvantage position relative to others an area of improvement.Action Plan: Develop a plan to eliminate or mitigate your weakness.
Opportunities: interesting trends and external chances to improve performance.Action Plan: Prioritize and optimize your opportunities and convert strength to opportunity.
Threats: External elements which can harm you.Action Plan: Counter threats and develop a mitigation plan.
2. Decision Charts –  commonly known as flow charts are easy-to-understand diagram showing how step in a process fit together. Go ahead and sketch your way out of the problem.
3. Pair-Compare – select the most effective options out of many by comparing each of the options against the other to determine the best options.
4. Pros-Cons-Interesting – weigh the pros and cons of a decision and look an idea from more than one aspect. List down the positive aspect under Pros, negative aspect under Cons and possible implications under Interesting
5. Cost-Benefit – a simple technique which can be used for financial decision where you can weigh the cost and benefits of a project quantitatively and thereby decide whether to go ahead.
