Intellectual growth is one of the goals of every individual. But one of the problems in attaining this goal is the limited vocabulary that a person has. It is hard to grasp ideas when somebody does not understand or does not know the meaning of certain words. The role of the teacher in developing one’s vocabulary is indispensable. Children go to school to gain knowledge on different areas, hence, the teacher must be able to explain concepts which they may not understand.

However, verbalism hinders vocabulary development. This may happen when concepts are based on words rather than on experience. As the saying goes “experience is the best teacher”, providing him direct experience if possible is the best way to develop ideas. There is better learning on personal experience since more senses are being used; one can see, hear and even feel the concept. However, verbal explanation aided by audio- visual materials can be used when the child does not have the necessary experience. Introducing a new word everyday (meaning and example included) before starting a lesson is an effective way to provide wide vocabulary among pupils. Another way is by helping the child to unlock meaning of unfamiliar words using the dictionary or through context clues and/or structural analysis. Young children may also develop concepts and learn many words on programs they watch on television. However, one should be careful on programs watched by children since some of them do not have much educational value.

Another problem that may arise is the fact that a single word may represent varied meanings. A child may erroneously conceptualize a particular word. The teacher must avoid such situations by giving all the possible meanings of the word. Exercises must be utilized for children to help them compare various meanings of a word and choose the one that fits the context. But a teacher must choose words that are worth teaching. Usually, a word is worth teaching if it is likely to occur many times in future reading matter. Also, a teacher must encourage his pupils to read since it widens their vocabulary. He can make use of play in teaching them to read. Also, listening enthusiastically when they narrate what they read may encourage them to read further. An educator should make vocabulary development not a burden on the part of the pupil. He must utilize various techniques to make this task an enjoyable one to attain greater results.
