What do we refer to when we say XYZ generation?

When we were on out teens we could feel the generation gap between us and our parents. Our father and mother were brought up in a culture entirely different from the ways of living we were accustomed to. Our parents then had a hard time trying to understand our ways.

On the same way, our children and grandchildren who belong to the XYZ generation referring to year 2003 up to present were brought up amidst modern technology and gadgets – cellphones, computers which we were not exposed to. Oftentimes, we hear old folks say, “Iba na talaga ang mga kabataan ngayon”. They are greatly influenced by media. They always like social interactions.

How could we – educators, parents and other adults bridge the gap in dealing with the XYZ generation? As elders, we must be consistent models to them. We can’t preach and expect them to follow our advice if we don’t live with what we say. Let us admit when we are wrong. Nobody is perfect. You will understand sincere repentance. When they ask questions, see it as positive sign. Give honest answer to honest questions.

Teenagers want to develop their own legitimate endeavors. This generation is under too much stress. Let’s make encouragement in our goal not discouragement.

When possible, approve their friends. This can be especially difficult for many of us. Be sure to take time to really know their acquaintances. Give teens the right to fail. We can’t protect them all their lives. Let us remind them that they can learn from their mistakes.

The next generations, as we also call the XYZ generation, are not bad but they need guidance from us adults. Let us listen to their pleas. Understanding and supervision are what they need from us.
