Underachievement of students comes into diverse factors. As Dr. Seuss puts it “ We see them come, We see them go, and some are slow, some are high and some are low. Not one of them is like another. Don’t ask why. “ Go ask your mother. “ This describes the different learning styles of students, that teachers should be aware of the learning environment, self-esteem, emotions and behavior interest in academic tasks, home and family, intra and interpersonal relationships, cognitive skills peer pressure or even teacher factor are some of the factors to be looked into .
According to a research, the estimated incidence of learning difficulty of school aged kids is 1 in 25. The findings of the Philippine
education state that: only 6 of every 1,000 Grade six pupils are prepared to
enter high school. Only 2 of every 1,000 4th year high school graduates are fr college, only 19 out of every 100 teachers are competent to teach English, Filipino every school has a teacher –student ratio of 1: 50 and up, 1 of every 7 pupils does not have a desk. 1 of every 3 students does not have a single textbook and 1 of every 4 students share a textbook.
Under achievement covers various factors. Acco9rding to Fenny Bautista” Children don’t come to school wth empty minds. They are active and dynamic human beings who have diverse and unique learning styles. But why mant stuents are classified as under achievers? Some of the reasons revealed by studies are the following.
Lack of attention in class- this study says that normal attention span of a child is 3-5 minutes/year of age
Basic Elements of Attention
. a. selective – it figure out where one’s attention should be
b. sustaining attention—ability to sustain attention amidstdistraction.
. Emotional problems –this can be primary cause of learning problems’
– Difficulty in getting along with teachers.
– Health Problems.
– Reading Difficulty
– Learning Difficulty//Disability like:
Disorganized thinking
Difficulty in decision-making
Behavior often inappropriate for situation
Low tolerance for frustration.
With this context ,, we can really say that the teacher is the decisive element in the classroom.
