Nat serves as a tool to evaluate the Performance of every school. Grade 3, grade 6 and Highschool pupils are tested in 5 learning areas which are English, Science, Math, Filipino and HKS. The test measures if all the Learning skills in each subject areas were mastered or not by the pupils. But sad to say, the present result of NAT is poor. This result only means that the school with the lowest score is not performing well in spite of the hardworking effort of the Teachers to make their pupils learn.
According to some teachers, the poor result of their pupils in NAT is not their fault because there are so many factors to be considered that affect the pupil’s performance. These factors could be the pupil’s family background, their socio economic status, poor study habit, misbehavior…etc…etc…etc…but isn’t really the Teacher factor that greatly affects the NAT result?
Let us know why?
As the child enters the school, the first requirement to be submitted is the child’s birth certificate. The information in the birth certificate will inform the teacher about the child’s family background. The information includes if the child’s parents are married or not and if the parents are professionals or not.
The opening of the class always starts with the orientation in order for the teacher to know their pupil’s personally.
From everyday discussion, the teacher always observesthe discipline and the behavior of his pupils. He really knew his pupils well; he knew who is the most disciplined and who is the undisciplined. He has a record of his class attendance to know who is always absent, who is always present, who is always tardy and he knows the reason why.
From the result of evaluation test, summative test and periodical test, the teacher already knew who has a good or poor study habit and who the fast or slow learner in her class is.
After the Teacher has computed his pupils’ grade, he always calls a meeting for the parents to report to them the achievements and even the failures of their children.
These are the things that a teacher does every day, that’s why according to him the poor NAT result is not her fault because he is working hard, he is always updated with the important records, and he is giving his 100% effort in his job. But the questions are, “Did he make a change to lessen these factors?” , “Is being an efficient teacher effective enough to make his pupils understand what he is teaching?”
All the factors that could affect the pupil’s performance were already known by the Teacher from kindergarten up to Grade 6 till High School, but still, even one of these factors is not solve. There are no changes. There are no improvements. There are no developments. Is it really because of the “Teacher factor”?The teacher could have done an action to solve it, he could have follow up her action if it is effective or not, or he could have changed his strategy to improve it because if he did, everybody will agree that it wouldn’t be his fault. The only fact about this is “ It’s really hard to become an Effective Teacher”.
Are you an Effective teacher or and Efficient teacher?
