We have seen that much of what children learn is the result of their interaction with other socio-cultural environment. It is necessary to have a designed of controlled environment to ensure the right kind of education for the young. Such environment is the school. The school provides the special environment for the formal, physical, mental, emotional and moral growth of the young.
The first important function of the school is to provide a simplified environment by selecting the features which are fully fundamental and capable of being assimilated by the immature member of society.
The second function of the school is to balance the various elements in the social environment to provide each individual an opportunity to escape from the limitations of the social groups in which he was born and to come into living contact with a broader environment. The intermingling in the school of young people of different folkways and mores, religion and socio-economic status creates for all a new and broader environment.
The third function of the school is to eliminate as much as possible, the undesirable and unworthy features of the existing environment that influence the individuals mental attitude. It is the duty of the school to select cultural heritage that should be transmitted to the young, thus eliminating the social heritage which shackles the minds of the people and hinders progress.
