School is where teaching and learning take place. For education to be effective it must consider the learners, their profiles, or the WH of learners, such as who are the learners? where are the learners? and what are the learners? To attain the ideal product, one must set the mission and vision in the realization of the duties of the ideal product and that bridge the gaps between what we like them to be and who will they become at the end of our teaching process.
Flexible learning is a pedagogical approach to the educational system. Flexible learning is multi-layered and multi-faceted (Garrick and Jakupec, 2000) and a continuum of approaches in terms of time, place content, and mode of varying degrees. An overarching driving force that provides learner’s greater choice and is not an alternative mode of education (Deakin University, 2009). Flexible learning is student-centered learning. It refers to those who are interested in a different way of learning that is suited to different kinds of learners. George and Luke (1995) defined flexible learning as promoting a deep approach to learning by purposefully selecting forms of delivery that are considered multi-dimensional. Its ethos is to enable and empower learners and give greater control of their learning and become more self-directed.
The elements of flexible learning include time, pace, and assessment. Time is gold as a common expression of it. In numerous studies, time plays a significant effect in learning delivery. Flexible learning gives the freedom of the learners to choose when learning will take place. Students have complete control and accountability over their learning through flexible learning. Rather than being forced to attend a class, individuals can choose when and how much time they spend learning. This power not only allows individuals to plan their education around their obligations but also assures that they are studying at the optimal moment. Some students, for example, maybe more productive in the evenings, but traditional schooling may limit them by only offering lessons during the day. Flexible learning allows students to determine when and how they will learn by customizing their course to their specific needs. As a result, they retain more knowledge and produce better results. Another element of flexible learning is pace. We all know learners as unique and different from one another. That requires us to better know our learners to create a meaningful learning experience that will help them to reach their full potential. They also have the benefit of being able to learn at their own pace, which can relieve a lot of stress. A great pace makes students feel as if they are progressing. Changing the type of work or activity, the method of presentation, or the way students are organized throughout a class is known as "changing the tempo." Teachers frequently rush through subjects before giving pupils an assignment to complete. This might put pressure on individuals to finish tasks quickly, but it leaves no room for pupils to ask questions. If a student does not understand a concept or idea that the teacher has communicated, they will be unable to accomplish the assignment to their full potential, obstructing their learning. Because of the flexibility of online learning, students can gradually absorb subjects and ensure complete knowledge before moving on. The last element of flexible learning is flexibility in assessment. Learning assessment gives proof of student learning at specific moments in time. Assessment serves to summarize what learners know and understand about the learning area. Learning assessment occurs after learning has taken place to determine if it is successful and is used to prepare for the learner’s future learning objectives and paths; give evidence of achievement to the broader community, including parents, instructors, students, and outside the organizations; and provide a clear and consistent interpretation for all audiences. Flexibility in assessment allows students some influence over their learning, flexibility in assessment can help encourage and involve students in the learning process. There are a variety of strategies to be flexible with assessments while still challenging learners, maintaining rigor, and keeping necessary structure. For instance, creating an online test that may be completed over a period, providing many opportunities to complete a test, and/or allocating substantially more time to complete a test than is typically required, and making this time available to all students.
Flexible learning may be just another approach to delivering quality education. But one thing is for sure, educators continue to do research on different ways to transfer learning tasks in pursuit of better serving their important client-our leaners. Because the future of the nation depends on them.
